UNIT 30 - LOCATION PHOTOGRAPHY

Pinhole Camera made using the body cap.

This is how we are able to make the pinhole camera to use for this assignment

Small square piece of tin cut out, small enough to fit inside of the body cap.

A hole is drilled in the middle of the body cap.

A pin is used to make a very small hole in the piece of cut tin foil, it has to be pressed really gently so you don't make the hole to big.

Tapping the small piece of tin with the pin hole in it inside the body cap, the pin hole needs to be right in the middle in the area that has been drilled.

This is the body cap the other way round when the foil has been tapped the other side.

This is when it's clipped onto the camera and you're ready to shoot.

My own pinhole camera pictures taken at Arnos Vale Cemetery

We met up with Marko Dutka at Arnos Vale cemetery, he then went through the different ways we could use the pinhole camera whilst we were there, how we could use light and positioning whilst using the tripod when taking the shot and also explained why we're doing the project, to commemorate the war dead on the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

The Arnos Vale Cemetery covers a large area and you have paths and tracks to get to anywhere you like, it's quite an interesting place and does seem to have character to it, some areas do seem to be quite over grown but there are grounds people who are there to
keep it in good condition

We were able to walk around the cemetery to find different war grave stones some were in different places all around the cemetery, some being in areas covered by trees which gave a great light effect with shadows from the leaves as the sun shone through.

The pinhole technique is used to give the same effect as when pictures were taken back in the early nineteen hundreds, the final look of the photograph when edited on photoshop is almost exactly the same, when you change the gradient, de saturate and changing the photo filter to sepia which works so well.

These are the shots that were taken around Arnos Vale Cemetery using the pin hole camera.

This shot has worked quite well, especially with how the sunlight has highlighted the arches on the front of the memorial also it's cast down on an angle to the right of the shot, the bright grass also makes the stone stand out well.

I like how the sunlight has cast through the pillars and is really bright at the end and its quite good with how grass is slightly slanted as the small lane goes up hill.

These first three were taken at the first WW just to the right as you walk in through the main gate, these were the first shots I had taken through the Pinhole

I quite like how the light has worked in this shot and also the green leaves break it up well, almost a bit much though.

The light is quite low in this shot

Although this has come out well with the combination of sunlight and the darker shadows helps with the depth in some way.

This has worked well with the stone right in the foreground, also the shadow cast over it allows you to see the regiment crest slightly better, the sun on the grass to right helps to bring it the front.

I like how the sunlight has created a great shape on the ground and also the grass breaks it up and creates what almost looks like hand painted lines.

This has caught the sun light shining down so well and because I've moved the camera during the shot it looks like the stone's floating above itself.

These two pictures were shot where there were 2nd WW stones lined next to each other, the sunlight was quite strong as I took these and again I used the technique of moving the camera during the shot, from right to left and also twisting it up whilst on the tripod.

These were taken of a stone of a Squadron Leader who lost his life in Afghanistan in September 2014, the light has worked well in this shot and it was taken with the Fisheye lens this time.

There is less sunlight shining on this time although the picture still works quite well and the stone is very clear to see.

Pictures after editing on Photoshop

These came out so well and were used in the exhibition of our work at the cathedral, everybody in the class had one of the edited pictures displayed.

Some pictures of the exhibition of of work in the Cathedral and also Cliff talking to the BBC about our work and the technique we used.

This is a video of interview that was done at the exhibition.

Creative Architecture

Statement of Intent

Creative architecture will be my choice of subject for project 2 on location photography, i'm going to be looking at photographers who have focused some of their work in this area for research.

I've chosen this subject as there will be a lot of different places and buildings I can find to make a really interesting shot, I will also need think about the weather and light conditions that will effect the picture a great deal.

I think it'll a good opportunity to take a great photograph whilst thinking about all of the areas that need to be thought about when shooting, with the title Creative Architecture the picture could be taken of any kind of building you like weather it be old or new as long as you take a really interesting shot.

Walking around Bristol or even a small town or village in the country side it'll give me so many different buildings to choose from, weather it be a large tower block a shop front or even an old farm, house or pub for example.

It's going to good to see how I can experiment with shooting at different angles and also using a tripod if I need to, also i'll have to see if it works form a lower position or even getting to a higher position away from what ever i'm shooting, I think this will be a brilliant project that will help you to consider so many things when you're taking the picture.

Rut Blees Luxemburg

Rut Blees is German photographer who currently lives in London, although her main subject is landscape iv'e found some of her work that is urban based and show some good work using architecture, some of her shots can look quite like what could be an abstract painting and don't always show much of the buildings or streets that she's chosen, these pictures are a good example.

Vertiginous exhilaration - 1995

This is taken from the top of a tower building and shot down to where the cars are parked, the slanted angle works well and it allows you to see more of the building in the foreground as it gets smaller when it reaches the ground. The cars parked at the bottom help you to see that its a tower block otherwise it might have been a flatter picture.

In deeper - 1999

The light in this picture makes you look down the steps right up towards the brightness shining in the water, the way certain parts of the wall on the left have caught the light in combination with the steps give good texture against the stillness of the water.

Black sunrise - 2010

This is taken of what looks like some kind of large sculpture at night, when much work of her's is shot, although you can only really see the bottom of the sculpture shapes created by the shining light in the centre do make it kind of absract in some way, the bright light in the centre does help to make a split between the flatter bottom and the top with a lot more shape and the curved sides of the sculpture.

Attempt of seduction - 1999

The shadows from the trees onto this yellow wall are amazing and the tree just from the right coming out of the small window is so sharp, there's a lighter tone yellow in the centre part made by the darkness of the leaves on the top right and left, I think shadows create a kind of layered effect as they are slightly different tones.

I like the way she works and some of her techniques used I will definitely have to think about when i'm choosing different kinds of architecture and shooting myself.

Josef Schulz

Josef Shulz was born in Poland and now he lives and works in Dusseldorf, the work of his i've looked at are pictures of small buildings that are no longer in use but are still in reasonably good condition, although you can easily see the boards over windows and the fact they're quite isolated with no people, cars or any activity around them. He also has panoramic pictures of what are called Centre commercial these are taken in front of large units used by different companies like Auto spares and a bed store for example, you're able to see cars parked and people walking around which shows you how they're definitely still in use.
I like the way he works and he tends to chose architecture that people would never have any interest with or make a good picture, but it's the way he uses light and colour of what he's shooting and also the weather conditions, when you look at the Poststructure pictures it kind of makes you wonder what they were once like or what they would've been used for.

Poststructure, 2012

The first two pictures look like they were taken in the States and the third looks like it could be a disused border checkpoint of some kind.

The large sign almost comes straight to the foreground as it's so bright against the white of the unit and sky, also the light colour of the tarmac helps to make building stand out.

It's a really good shot with how he has the white building on a centre line from left to right but there's still space either side of it, again the sky is quite a darker tone so it brings the building to the front.

He's used the weather condition of fog so well as the small checkpoint and road next to it become the main focal point although you can still pick out parts of the background, you can see the red and white striped pole pointing up on the righthand side of the building.

Centre commercial, 1999-2000

These three photos are taken of commercial units, the panoramic style pictures could well have been made by using a tripod with the camera kept on the same level and moving it to the right after each shot.

The blue sky just above the units in this picture does make them stand out and you can really see the shape of them as you look from left to right.

I like how how the cars are parked in front because it adds to the "centre commercial" name and you can tell how customers would be coming and going all day.

The pictures are such a good example of how it's not architecture that anyone would think makes an interesting photograph, but it's a mixture of completely different fronts and brand names on each unit with signs and colours.

My own series of pictures

These are my own pictures of closed down pubs, i've worked in the same way as Schulz because he took photographs of disused buildings which he named Poststructure 2012, I liked the idea of this and for some reason it does make you wonder what it was like when it was open, what people would go there and how lively it was

The Pineapple

I think The Pineapple has only just closed in the last two years so the building still looks in quite good condition, the metal covers over the door and windows make it quite obvious that it's definitely had last orders, the light colour of the walls draw you towards the front of the pub because of the dark colour of the road.

Gloucester Hotel

Although this doesnt really look like a pub that's only closed down within the last few years it was actually pub but it last closed it's doors in 195, in some ways you can kind of see how it used to be a pub with the two doors and four windows on the ground floor, it's great how the building curves around as the road goes up the hill on the right.

Adam & Eve

I'm not to sure when this pub closed down but from the look it must have been quite recent, it's on a hill and it makes quite an interesting picture with how the road slants up from the right to the left.

The Printers Devil

I think the Printers Devil was closed down within the last ten years and like The Pineapple it has the metal covers over all the windows and door, it also has a large metal sheeting all the way down the righthand side, because it's such a small building the office buildings in the background are a slightly lighter tone and the orange colour of the wall draws your eye to it, the green bush helps with the theme of it being closed down and also the graffiti on the front as well.

This closed pub is in Priddy on the Mendips and because of the weather it does make quite a dreary shot, although the colour of the walls help the closed pub to stand out, the dark trees on the left stand out well against the light grey of the sky.

Hunters Lodge Inn

This is another pub on the Mendips, the only problem with this picture is that it's actually still open but with the state of the building it almost looks like it's about to fall apart, this shot would've worked a lot better if the car wasn't parked outside the front of it, the grey weather is a good combination with the colour of the pub and it does seem like it's been closed down for a while.

Why Have pubs started to close down.

Quite a lot of pubs seem to have closed down within the last ten years which i think is a shame, it's just because of the change of how people live in the country and also to do with employment and how its changed over the years, The Printers Devil was actually right next to where The Western Daily Press was once printed and now it's been demolished there are no workers left to be visiting the pub, the name of the pub actually came from the name of the person who was working alongside the printing machine, that person would actually be covered from head to feet in black ink.
Factories and other large woking areas seem to be moving abroad and there is no more of the large group of workers who would visit many of the pubs everyday, it does make you think back to what they were like and how lively they once were, also not as many people tend to go to pubs now because of the price and how expensive it could be to spend an evening there, they would rather stay at home and buy drinks from the local shop or supermarket where it's much cheaper, there are still a lot of bars and pubs still open which is a good thing although they tend to be in the centre of the city or town but at least there's still somewhere to go and have a drink with some friends.

Location Assignment. Colour Theory project

Your colour theory work should consist of two elements.
1. Research into RGB and CMYK
2. The Photographing stage and colour schemes

ELEMENT 1:

The photographic stage is dominated by RGB colour Red, Green and Blue.
Whilst the Printing stage is dominated by CMYK colour, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key (Black)

ELEMENT 2:

You should produce 6 images that should be made up of 2 photographs using Complimentary colours with a description of Complimentary colours.

2 Photographs using Analogous colours with a description of Analogous colours on a colour wheel.

2 photographs using Monochromatic colours

Research in RGB

RGB is where red, green and blue are added together to make array of different colours this is known as the colour model the combination of the three letters of the primary colours, the main purpose of RGB is how he colours are shown through electric devices like, televisions for example but also digital photography, although before it was shown through electronic equipment it was still recognised and used as a known theory.
RGB is an idea that depends on the device but different devices can show it differently, the normal electrical gear with RGB input are TV, video cameras, digital cameras and scanners, colour printers on the other hand are not within this group and are Known as CMYK as  they subtractive colour.

These are some red, green and blue shots, its quite an obvious example really.

the water in this swimming poole makes a good effect with the ripples in the water.

There is so much texture in the grass against the ladies feet, it's nice though how the front of her shoes are shining.

This shows you the combination of the red, green and blue the orange peppers but also different areas within the dish.

CMYK
CMYK is the colour model which is process colour and also four colour it is used in colour printing, it can be used to describe colour printing if it's going to be used, it actually stands for the four inks used when using some printers, CYAN, MAGENTA, YELLOW and KEY which is BLACK, KEY is the key plate and the four colours are aligned.
CMYK works because it is covering colours on a lighter colour like white or possibly anything of a lighter tone, by doing this it can be know as a subtractive colour model as it is covering and masking light colours from the background.
Diagrams using colour circles to show the Additive colours with RGB on the top
and also the subtractive colours with CMYK below.

This picture with RGB next to CMYK is a good way to see the difference, you can see how much brighter the colours are compared to CMYK on the righthand side, you must be aware that if the the picture is being used for some kind of design the bright colours in the original will not look the same when printed, you would be able to check this in Photoshop as you are able to select the CMYK mode just to preview what the final printed picture will look like.

Analogous colours on a colour wheel.

These are the colours, next to each other on this colour wheel which could be secondary purple, tertiary red purple and primary red for example, together these colours are used to give the look of different temperatures like warm or cool although they don't have to much contrast

Monochromatic Colours

These are the colours in this example below are of different tones of one colour blue, it starts on the left with a light shade of blue and and the changes all the way along with the strips in to the darkest blue on the right, unlike Analogous they do have much more contrast and seem to create more texture.

This is a good example of a monographic photo, you can see the the different tonal changes in the flower, with the yellow which goes into light orange and also the dark brown that fades into a light orange.

The light blue fades into a darker tone really well on the bonnet of the car but also on the dashboard and steering wheel as well.

Analogous colours

These are three colours that are found next to each other in the colour wheel, one of which would be the most dominant, this would be a primary colour but it could also be a secondary and a tertiary. A Analogous colour arrangement does actually produce a Monochromatic look. When they're together these colours are used to give the look of different temperatures like warm or cool although they don't have to much contrast.

Here are some good examples of Analogous colour shots.

There are quite a few Analogous colours in this image especially from the light tone of blue to the darker tone of the two bottles.

You can see the colour scheme clearly on the small hut on the left hand side for sure.

I think this is a great picture with the mirrored effect in the water the front of the boat shows a good tonal fade but also the strip of the water on the right hand side.

Research essay

Illustrated research essay on a range of specialist areas of location photography; this is to include at least four from the following list:

§ Architecture, Social, Travel, Industrial, Documentary, Sport, Portraiture, Reportage.
Your notes should include:
  • §  The differences between the specialist areas listed above (and
    others you may think of).

  • §  Comparisons with studio photography.

  • §  Specialist techniques.

  • §  Specialist equipment.

  • §  Health & safety.

  • Social photography can show what is happening with people in everyday life and pictures can be taken at any time, its such a good way of capturing a certain moment with a person or people and this creates a picture of so many words, some shots can be taken when people are unaware of you taking the picture but some great pictures are taken when people know or even when you're shooting one person and they would be posed in they're own way.

  • These pictures i've chosen to look at are the work of Bruno Postigo and Darren Pineda, all of them are of one person but they still have so much to read from and the way they're shot and techniques used work so well.

  •    Bruno Postigo
  •
  • Although the picture is quite focused on the man and the background is just of the wall it still has quite a lot you can read from, the expression on this face, the jacket he's wearing, it really does make you wonder what he does during the day, but he's giving the impression that he's in a quite a good mood.

  • Darren Pineda

The light works so well in this picture, it's shinning through the window on the left on to the girls back also the shadow from the bottom righthand corner fades out and brings her right into the foreground, with this shot there are more questions you can ask yourself compared to the one above.

  • Joan Colom

  • This picture was taken back in the late 1950s early 1960s it's good composition with how the street on the right and edge of the buildings join together in the background, it does make you think why would the lady be nicely dressed on that street.

Darren Pineda

the girl is brought right to the foreground against the lighter tone of of the grass and track either side, the way she's holding on to the fence and leaning to the left work well together, you are kind of drawn towards her facial expression as well

Joan Colom

This is a great picture of the old man smoking his pipe outside of what looks like a bar, the combination of his jackets and what looks like a beret and the expression on his face makes it look like he could having a good drink in the evening.

  Bruno Postigo

This picture does express a lot of happiness from the girl, you're really draw towards her facial expression as the light colour of her face stands out so well against the darker shadows bellow and the dark colour of her hair,  with this photo you would think she could be out with some friends of hers maybe.

Documentary photography is known to be used as making a record of anything that happens that weather it be important or just day to day events for people, it can be seen a lot with photojournalism and reporting the times of real life. Photographs were taken as early as the mid 1800s and they are a such a good archive to show how much countries, architecture and people have changed over the years, also events that have happened like the American civil war and the 1st world war to name only a few and are a very important part of our history.

Although this picture is only of a lady on the bus the composition and light make such an interesting picture, because it was taken at night the strip light above shows her face and the top of the seats. It was taken on what seems like an everyday journey she travels or maybe a bus or coach ride away from where she lives.

You are drawn straight towards the man who looks like he's swinging the dog around with something in it's mouth, it makes you wonder if it's done because the photo is being shot and it shows you how it is in that area of the city, especially with the either side of the street.

It's great to see what it was like in the mid 1800s and its unbelievable to see that the buildings almost look like they would now, in some ways the only things that tell you it was taken over a hundred years ago are the horse and cart on the right and what looks like piles of some kind rubbish on the road.

It's great how the light in photo joins together in the tunnel in front of the lady, she also stands out because of the dark jacket and trousers she's wearing, you are able to see the two police officers on the left in the background and it does give you the question of why they're there, by the way she's stood on her phone it looks like it could just be a normal day.

This was taken by Lewis Hine in the early 1930s and it looks like it's part of the building of a tower block in New York, even though it was taken eighty years ago it the final print has such good quality and it's great how the building on the right fade out in the background, it makes the men woking with the crane stand out so well, were so lucky to have pictures like this and we can see the process of how great cities grew over the years.

This photograph is quite a shocking image of a child holding AK 47 machine gun, it was taken by Manuel Rivera Ortiz, much of his work shows the conditions of how people live in un developed countries, it looks like this child could actually be involved in some kind of combat but the look in his face almost looks like he's quite relaxed.

Sport photography can cover pretty much any kind of sport, most photos in this area are used in photojournalism especially when it's professional sport like premier league football for example, amateur pictures of a family playing cricket would be known as Vernacular Photography this would be a picture of an everyday thing that could happen.
Professional photographers in would normally be at a cup match in football are a well known cycle race like the Tour de France, they would always try to get into the best position and shooting close up shots right next to it.

A good example of a shot during a football match its taken really well with the crowd in the stadium are blurred out and the three players are in in focus, you can really see the movement and also the expressions in their faces shows you how much effort they're putting into it.

I really like this action shot of a motocross bike in a race, it's taken as he's going around a corner and gravel and mud being thrown up by his wheels shows the speed and how rough the ground is, the rider is right in the centre and the trees in the background show you that it would be on an outside track at night.

Again the close up of this person swimming shows so well how they could be trying to win the race, the splashed water around their right arm allows you to see the movement and it's the main part you focus on especially as the bottom is so blurred out.

I think this was taken using a stop motion technique and this is one of my favourite photos as you are able to see the different stages of the trick from start to finish, it looks like it could've been taken with a fisheye lens and just as he's going over the bin with the frontside heel flip it does draw you towards how much hight he's popped up.

A slow shutter speed would have been used in this shot, it really does help you to see the movement, he is slightly more in focus as well as the container and pavement below as they're not moving at all. I think this technique works so well with sport photography as it does show you what is actually happening with that one particular action the person or people are going through.

Architecture photography is basically focused on taking pictures of buildings weather it be houses office buildings, shops, pretty much anything in a city but also in the countryside, it can also be of statues, art installations, things that look appealing to the eye.
Photos are shot exterior but also interior and architectural photographers are normally well known for using specialised techniques and also equipment like a perspective lens, also a high resolution camera made by the Swiss company Sinar.

A picture taken of what looks like a bridge in New York, i'm not sure if it's Queens Bridge or Brooklyn bridge as it seems to be a lot smaller, the cables from both sides of the picture all stretch up towards the double arched bridge support and you're able to see the skyline of the city against the light orange tone of the sunset, the darkness of the bridge in the foreground allows you see the bridge going towards the city in the background.

Although this could be considered as a shot of something not that pleasing to the eye personally I quite like it, the different colours within the balconies do make interesting and it makes you look into them also the pillars on the the bottom of the flats has the sunlight shining through, because it's of only a small corner of the building it gives you the question of how big is it and where would it be within the city.

This is such a good good picture of what looks like a sculpture by an artist, it raelly does allow you to see right into the amazing shapes that have been constructed, the red and silver bring it right to the front with the light blue sky in the background.

There is quite a lot to look at in this picture because of all the art work on the walls, ceilings and even different colour floor markings or tiles, you get a good perspective of length when you look through the door in the centre and the light coming in through the windows helps this.

this was taken in a large train station and the bright lights on the curved roof and the train tracks from the lower right corner all become joined in the background, you're able to see the metal work which would have been built maybe over a hundred years ago and this is a really good part of the picture.

Evaluation

The Location Photography unit covered a lot of things that you must think about when taking pictures in this area, I think it was really helpful with the assignment of colour theory as it's so important when taking a shot and after researching it seems quite straight forward, also you're are able to see how many things you consider with the location being one of the main factors with pictures of people, architecture, different sports, events, or even certain things happening in different countries that will down in history like a conflict for example.
Some photographs taken many years ago that i've looked at show you how things have changed so much like the building of cities, society, fashions and style of architecture to name only a few.
