Statement of intent of how i've changed my mind

I have decided to change my mind from the initial idea of a Photographic journey through Bristol, my reason for doing this is that i'll be focusing on one particular subject as opposed to taking shots of all kinds different areas like suburban estates, large commercial areas like the centre of Bristol for example and then a large industrial part of the city like Avonmouth as i take my journey across Bristol.

The Working title will be --------- and i will be finding modern new build housing estates as well as blocks of flats and office buildings, i will try to find estates that have been built within the last fifteen to twenty years and take photographs to show how houses are built to look exactly the same and in some ways look quite boring, i'm also going to look for flats and office buildings that also have this same architectural look, when i display my work each picture will have the street name of where it was taken or the building company that began the development

The influences will be from photographers who have looked into modern buildings and pictures that are taken which you initially think are quite minimal or boring, i think this will help me to think about the composition of the picture and how to make sure it shows the similarity and minimalism of modern building, i will also try to take shots that don't really include people or cars as i don't really want anything to take your eye away from building itself

Research for my final proposal project

Martin Parr

Martin Parr made a book called Boring Postcards which was a collection of postcards which were made using photographs of the M5 for example, one of my favourites was the photo of Caister Chalet, Caister Holiday camp

These are screen shots of his book, even though the postcards are made from photographs that look like they should be used for advertising or even plans for building developments, it does actually make interesting and it makes you wonder why these pictures would've been used the boring postcards become quite good to look at because they're pictures you would not normally see.

This is one of my favourites as i mentioned before, the more i look at it it makes me think it's actually a well shot photo, colour, composition even though it's of prefab chalets and people sat on deck chairs in front of them

This is a really good example of  the of composition i would like to use, there's no traffic or any activity.

This is of a toll border crossing that could well be in the United States, there's minimal activity in this photograph and it's isolation makes you ask yourself so many questions.

Thomas Struth

The colours really work so well in this picture and stand out so well from the white sky.

This is a very good example of what i would like to achieve with my own work although the graffiti and paint peeling from the walls does give some kind of character to the picture.

The parallel lines of the houses draws your eye to the centre of the image and composition helps to display the similarity of the buildings as they go down the street.

This image is an excellent example of the 1960s high rise blocks of flats for social housing.

I like the combination of these four images because of the different colours and shapes within each individual picture.

My own Photographs of boring new build housing estates

These are the photographs that i took around new build housing estates blocks of unimposing flats and office blocks. My influences have been the photographs of Thomas Struth and Martin Parr's book of Boring Postcards. The simplicity and minimalism of Thomas Struth's photographs make you ask yourself many questions which is contradictory. The photographs show no activity and are completely focused on the buildings.

This is the start of my ------- assignment i chosen to follow, these will be the initial photos that i shot that helped me to progress and have final photographs that'll show what i want.

Blocks of flats and buildings near Millennium Square

The first shots where of this flat and it was right on the main road and by a roundabout so it was quite hard to get a shot with no traffic or people walking.

I did manage to this without any people or traffic although it does have the lens glare as the sun was in front of me.

I thought the last two were shot from a good position but again i have the lens glare from the sun.

I was quite pleased with this picture but the the roof of the old terraced house gives two totally different types of buildings

those two above have the same combination of old and new buildings which is not really what i'm looking for.

This would've been better if zoomed out as you can only see the top righthand corner.

This does have an old red brick house on the lefthand side but you can't see any features on the tiled roof so it works quite well.

I think those last two where over exposed and it'll be so much better to have the bottom of the flat in as well.
