COMPUTERS IN ART AND DESIGN
You are required to research and critically analyse a minimum of 8 web- sites, the websites does not all need to be Photographer websites, although you should include them as a majority. You should look at individual pages and analyse:
Firstly you should look at the website as a whole.
Eight websites for research and to analyse.
This is a website that shows photos of Ed Ardnaud that were taken early to mid 1980s of Hardcore bands preforming mainly in the States.
The website doesn't promote or sell any products and mainly aimed for people who are interested in looking at the pictures of the bands playing at different gigs.
As a site it looks quite good and I thought it makes you want to really look at the pictures although it's based around certain bands which could only attract people who are interested in seeing them playing.
It's not really a site that's for selling any products or prints unfortunately as this would have a lot of people after them although there is a link edarnaud.com where you might be able to.
The design does look quite chaotic with a combination all different photos in a kind of collage in black and white with black text over the top, which does make some of the text hard to see, it has a selection of pictures which you click on to see all of them and they're displayed at a really good size, the pages turn at a fairly good speed, no moving images or footage is on the site but I don't think this matters at all.
I like this site because it shows such good photos shot whilst the bands are playing and you can see the intensity so much, if I was to change anything I think it would be the background, make it a bit more plain and easier to see the text other than that it's a brilliant website.

onlyny.com
Only NY is a clothing company based in New York and the website is based around advertising all of their clothing new and old, it's designed for anyone who's interested in buying something new and people who follow the brand, you're able to chose and buy something online and it's quite a large site with a white background and a bold font, its really easy to use and navigate, every option is displayed well.
The style of the site does match the style of clothing, simple but bold looking text, the good examples of photography are used to show the clothes when they're worn, the pictures in the Lookbook are taken in and around New York and show some good street shots, but are mainly modelling of the clothing.
you're able to look through all the different clothes they have on the site and put them into the Sopping Cart, you then select the icon at the top righthand corner, it then shows what you've chosen and you click on the checkout again on the lower right and pay by PayPal which is which is a safe way to pay.
The site runs quickly and there are sometimes small video edits to watch which is good, also the pictures of the clothing zoom in and change the view so you can see from other angels which helps for you to see if you like it.
Like all of the websites i'm looking i wouldn't make any changes and it works really well for people who are buying or even just looking and different clothes and styles on the Lookbook.
Hypebeast.com
Hypebeast, a site that is known for mens fashion but the site does cover Design and the Arts to name only a few, it's a fairly easy to use and runs at a normal speed, although when looking at photography you first have to type it into the search bar at the top righthand corner.
You are able to go on the the store selection and you're able to look at different clothing brands click onto them but then taken to their own website, where you then able to buy anything online, its a large site and you have a lot of different options you can select on the top bar.
It's got a nice design and it does kind of draw you into it although for me iI don't really like to have adverts all over the place on the home screen which can sometimes make you not bother to entering the site, the pages do seem to turn over fairly fast but some times the images have taken longer which could be something to do with your connection.
Pages connected to the site are easy to use and seem to keep you interested with browsing the site, the text used is in quite a simple font and the white background helps to make everything stand out, especially images which are a god size some which can cover the length of the page.
There are small sections the can show movement from a section of footage that is repeated which are to make you select them to see what it's actually about, for me it doesn't do anything but it should definitely work for others.
Vice.com
This website Vice.com is taken from a magazine and it covers so many different subects that you wouldn't normally find in any other magazine, its not a website that's focused around selling anything but it does cover fashion it's more about reporting about events and different styles and brands releasing new ranges, or different styles you wouldn't normally see.
It's big site and you can be drawn towards things you wouldn't normally be interested in, it does also have links that you can select which take you different sites.
I think the site is looks really good like many of the other sites i've looked at it has a white background which makes pictures stand out so well, when you first enter onto the home page there's normally a large picture of one of the stories that's being covered, pages turn really well and at the top of the main screen you have all the different options you can select, many of the photos are displayed in a good size and normally have a piece of writing about them, describing what they're about.
There are moving images for certain things you can select and also for small adverts on the site, although there aren't to many which for me is a good thing, the less the better.
In terms of changing the website there's not really anything I think I would change, I have been saying this about most of the sites i've looked at but its just because I like going to the site looking around it.
mode2.org
This site shows the work of one of my favourite artists work, he combines graffiti style using brush work, pastels and also drawings the website isn't used to sell his work but it's mainly for people who want to see it and there also pictures of him whilst he's painting, you are able to go on to his blog which he does up date quite regularly.
It's quite a big site and it doesn't have any any advertisements at all apart from contact details for galleries and the people who've made the site, which is a really good thing.
The design of the site is done well, it's quite simple with a plain very light tone of grey background which make the pictures stand out so well and it's easy to navigate so you can't be unsure of what you're looking at, the simple font of the text allows you to be sure on what you're selecting and like the pictures it stands out from the background being in a light tone blue.
The photos are taken well some which are focused in to the work so you are able to see the detail, but there are also shots from a distance and you able to see the size of it especially when he's worked in clothes shops but also when he's had exhibitions in different galleries.
There are no moving graphics to the site which I don't think it needs and for me I wouldn't make any changes, it's a great site and it's such a good way of being able to see his work, on different projects he's had and some pictures of when it's unfinished.
dazeddigiital.com
dazeddigital.com is an online version of the magazine that now has editions in Japan and Korea, the site news, video, fashion, music, art + culture and photography, it's targeted at all different types of people but in someways you have to know about the magazine to find out about the site.
The large site runs really well and with the menu bar at the top everything's easy to find you're able to scroll down when you're on the home screen and see many different stories that you could be interested in which include pictures.
Its really a good site to look at and it helps that there are pictures which are always well sized attached to all the stories and this does help especially when you're reading, there are small section when scrolling dow that allow you to go into certain areas that've covered before, there aren't any adverts on the site which is a good thing as they don't take space for things that are much better to see.
It does have a very simple look in terms of background and every thing is easily read, its not made to complicated so you don't really get lost when you're looking around the site.
It does have moving images at times which sometimes does make stop and look to see what they're being used for also the video section in the menu bar is full of parts from films, documentaries and music videos.
I like the site because there are so many different things you're able to look at especially and there aren't any changes i would make apart from maybe thinning it out so there's not so much going on at once although i think that is quite good.
This is a site that looks back at photos shot back in the 1960s, 80s, 70s and even quite recent, the photographs shown are of all different types of things including some of well know actors and pin up ladies from back in the 1950s.
The target audience I think would be people who like to see pictures that go back and also see things they haven't seen before, it's a big site with so many different options of different things to look at and articles to read, you are able to shop on TSY and buy prints, clothing as well as other things, by selecting the item going to you're cart and using PayPal which I think is one of the best ways to pay.
The website has like all the other sites i've looked at a very simple layout and background with a simple easy to read font and the images stand out so well, when you choose a group of pictures they're displayed well and at a really good size, there aren't any moving images but there are some short length video edits which works well.
In any way of changes, I think I would possibly make it a bit easier to navigate around as sometimes you can get slightly lost having to the back arrow to get to where you were before, other than that I think it's a great site and really worth having a look.
josefschulz.com
This site is to show the work of the photographer Josef Schulz and it shows work he's done into 90s, it has information about him even a C.V, exhibitions he has done and also a news option that allows you to see what will be happening with work he has in new galleries.
The website is targeted towards people who have heard about his work and have maybe not seen it before or even to get information on new exhibits in galleries or even to contact him, it's not really used to sell any kind of product at all although you are able to buy to books which show his Poststructure work, you're able to use the PayPal option which is a really good safe way to pay.
The website is quite big and you're able to see so much of his work and also see details about himself, i think it's designed really well and has a very simple design which makes it easy to use, everything runs at a good speed, the font and size of the photos are definitely a good size and the background is black so this does make the images stand out so well, after you've selected from the menu box on the top righthand side, it doesn't have any any moving graphics which I don't think it needs.
If I was to make any changes it would just be the colour of text which is his name at the top righthand side just so it's easier to see over the black background, other than that I think it's a great site that shows his work so well in different areas he's covered and it gives you the option of buying one of his two books.
Finally
- Of the minimum of eight websites you are to analyze two of them should be these websites.http://www.autograph-abp.co.uk/#
- www.bbc.co.uk http://www.bhphotovideo.com/
- Which one is your favourite website out of the ten you have critically analyzed and why?
www.autograph-abp.co.uk
This Autograph website is used to show work and exhibitions that will be held at a gallery they run, it was started in the late 1980s and it was used for promoting the work of black photographers, there own ideas and work within their own communities.
It's targeted on people who want to see work displayed and any events they could be involved in, you do have the shop option on the top bar of the home page by selecting this you're able to buy a good selection of books showing older photos and covering different subjects, i'm not really sure how they would want you to pay but you do have to enter a lot of your own details.
I think the site is aimed towards people who are interested in anything they are involved with or possibly exhibitions that could be happening at their gallery, its quite a big site with a lot of different options at the top of the home screen which are, EXHIBITIONS | EVENTS | SHOP | NEWS | ARCHIVE | LEARNING | VISITOR INFO | ABOUT US | RIVINGTON PLACE.
Its really good when you select the archive selection because you're able to then chose different projects, photographers and decades it's interesting to see how different music scenes have changed fashions and attitudes as well as things happening around the country.
The design is quite simple with what looks like bold helvetica font in light grey black and red and also blue, its all on top of a white background which helps the text and images to stand out so well, they're aren't any moving images which I don't think it needs although there are some bits of footage you can select.
There aren't any major changes that I would make but it might be good to change the colour of the background still with a light tone and also make the home page not so full up, other than that its a great site with a large amount of photos to look at and information on whats happening with exhibitions and different events.
HTML Basics
This will be our first attempt of going through the process of creating our own website design using HTML coding.
This my own page on Text Edit after following all of the steps.
After following though these steps i've realised that using HTML is how all sites are designed, you're able to create a website that looks so good although it's quite a long process as you go through all of the different stages, using it for the first time i did get slightly confused and sometimes you can forget where you are as you're going through but as you get used to it and use it more often you'll become it'll become a lot easier.
Dreamweaver
This is how you're able to make a site using Dreamweaver which i thought was a lot easier to follow than going through the HTML process which i did before.
The fist part is importing in all of images and text before you start, this then allows you to use them in Dreamweaver.
This was how i built the cross section table where images and text like the artists names can be added.
That was how you would then add the images and use the option of image behaviour, which you find out when it's finished.
This is the final page that i've made, as you click on each artist on the left it displays their work along the bottom and as you move along it shows you the work above.
My first website that i've made using Wix
Wix is a site that enables you to create you're own site and it guides you through it which really does help.
These are the first parts and where i decide what it's going to called.
Its really good how it actually tells you what it's going to be doing.
As you can see above it makes your homepage but with images of they're own, its good to see how it looks even before you've made any changes.
Small boxes do pop up to let you know what your doing or what'll be happening next.
These last few screen grabs show how you can change colours of the background or areas around text.
You're able to change text fonts and colours.
It also gives you a preview to see how it'll look.
There's a list as show on the righthand side of the screen grab to take you through different different parts of the site when editing.
